After Moonrise

On the first Karva Chauth since the death of her husband, grief-stricken Priya is on a mission to complete the ceremony—despite having left the ER 24 hours ago. Meanwhile, her estranged daughter Simran arrives after receiving a call from the hospital, but doesn’t know exactly what’s wrong with her. When Priya coughs up blood after choking on her medication, Simran realizes that her worst fear has come true: her mother is sicker than she realized.

Simran calls 911, but Priya refuses medical assistance. Frustrated and scared, Simran confronts her mom about Priya’s choices, which mirror Priya’s avoidance of the father’s worsening alcohol addiction. “I called rehab facilities… you just stood there and watched. Why didn’t you do anything?” When Priya reveals her guilt and how she views her disease as punishment for her inaction (“I sowed bad seeds”), Simran breaks down in a panic attack and reveals how desperately she needs her mother. This raw confession forces Priya to realize that her daughter’s love might be reason enough to fight for survival and reconnection.
